Her hatred for the cop swelled within her as the rear of the old church came into view. Watching through the hole in the basement door, she’d been only seconds from attacking the lone officer. If he hadn’t run from the house, and if the second man hadn’t arrived, she would have dispatched him and turned him into one of her slaves, made him a resident of her basement home. Now she was forced to find a new place to hide. She bristled with anger at the thought of breaking her promise so soon, her promise to never hide again.

She halted her little group and sent Rob to investigate the dilapidated structure, since his mortal wounds weren’t as visible as the others. She realized she should strangle more of her prospected converts, squeeze the life from them, so they were less repulsive to the living, but she didn’t enjoy it nearly as much as drawing blood—seeing, smelling, and sampling the substance she so craved.

From the safety of the woods she watched the dead boy stroll through the shaded cemetery like a mourner visiting a lost ancestor. Rob reached the rear of the church, ascended the few steps, and tried the back door only to find it locked. Peering through the door’s window, she could see the interior of the small structure through her new recruit’s eyes. The sunlight streaming through the front windows revealed a room with four clapboard walls and eight rows of ancient pews—no place to even conceal herself, much less her growing family of possessed corpses. Her anger at the cop returned. The house had been the perfect spot. This place would not do at all.

Defeated, Rob descended the stairs and strolled toward the group at the edge of the woods. After a few steps he stopped and turned. He bent down and peered beneath the church, to the coal-black space underneath.

Nobody saw the smile that split the pale face of the dead high-school student.

Nor did anyone witness her small band of undead soldiers slink from the cover of the woods and squirm underneath the crumbling church, joining the other vermin already residing there. One by one, the hungry blackness swallowed them, until the swaying shadows of moss on a gentle breeze were the only things moving in the old cemetery.
